The UAB/Selma Family Medicine Residency
Program offers a two or four week clerkship in Family Medicine
and Rural Medicine to third and fourth year medical students.
The main goal of the Family Medicine rotation is to give a short
but thorough exposure to Family Medicine. The rotation is designed
to integrate hospital and clinic so that total continuity is
experienced.
The student will spend morning hours making
rounds with residents and attendings at the hospital. The student
will be assigned certain patients to follow from admission to
discharge. History and physicals will be reviewed by the Chief
Resident and discussed in depth. The student will be on call
one night per week for family medicine with the resident. Weekends
are free.
The student will spend two or three afternoons
per week in the clinic seeing patients with upper level residents
or attendings. Didactical teaching will take place in clinic.
One half day per week will be spent in a rural clinic, at the
local health department, or in a private office.
One half day is given for reading. Each
day at noon there is a conference on current topics that students
and residents are expected to attend. Lunch is provided.
To apply for a clerkship, medical students
contact our office in Selma. Students are taken year round.
